While he did not reach the holy city of Lhasa -- which was his ultimate goal -- Hedin succeeded in creating the first detailed maps of Tibet. During this expedition, Hedin also discovered Loulan, an ancient city located on China's old Silk Road; here he unearthed many manuscripts from the Han Dynasty.
