The program revealed to Western analysts that Stalin's agents had succeeded in stealing plans for the atomic bomb, and the extent of Soviet intelligence penetration of the West. The Venona program succeeded in breaking up many of the Soviet espionage networks in the U.S. and other countries and was declassified in July 1995. This book was issued in conjunction with an October 1996 conference on Venona for scholars and historians, co-sponsored by the CIA and the NSA.
