BM- notes two editions of this work in 1829; single volume quarto and a two volume octavo. This is the rare single volume edition. John Lewis Burckhardt ( 1784 - 1817), the son of a Swiss Colonel undertook the journey to Mekkah in 1814, disguised as an Arab; he had long since used the name Sheikh Ibrahim in his travels, which he began in 1809 under the sponsorship of Sir Joseph Banks and the African Association. Burckhardt's description of the Hedjaz was the first accurate one to reach Europe. Burckhardt transmitted to the Association the most accurate and complete account of the Hedjaz, including the cities of Mekka and Medina, which has ever been received in Europe." Early issue of the second U.K. edition, following the first edition of 1877. Edwards, a journalist and novelist, published this travelogue shortly after returning from her first voyage to Egypt, a trip which prompted her subsequent dedication to Egyptology and archeology. J.A. Symonds noted that "It is this enthusiasm for old Egypt, running powerful and deep throughout [A Thousand Miles] as an undercurrent to its many other interests, that gives its real charm to the work" (The Academy, XI, 65); Edwards's passion and her evocative writings helped inspire much support for the protection and study of Egyptian monuments. In addition to numerous wood-engraved illustrations done after drawings by the author, the volume features a photolithographic facsimile of a hieroglyphic inscription at Abou Simbel. Some minor rubbing to spine ends but o/w an about fine copy. Amelia Edwards [1831-1892] prolific novelist, poet and travel writer. Her earliest 'travel' book was published in 1862 and was a children's picture book of Belgium. Edwards soon travelled further afield, journeying to the Dolomite mountains. The following year she travelled to Egypt and discovered what was to be the love of her life. Travelling by dahabiah (sailing boat peculiar to the Nile) and armed with a sketch-book she carefully recorded all she saw; temples, graves and monuments. Her book "A Thousand Miles Up the Nile" provided the first general archaeological survey of Egypts ruins. It earned her the admiration of the leading archaeologists of the day. The above work contains "the substance of a course of lectures on ancient Egyptian subjects recently delivered in the United States of America."
